Police confiscate MP Mbai's pistol over assault of KPLC worker

Detectives have confiscated the firearm belonging to Kitui East Member of Parliament Nimrod Mbai over an incident in which he allegedly attacked a Kenya Power officer at his Acacia home in Kitengela.

Mbai is a licensed firearm holder.

He is also a former police officer.

He once worked as the bodyguard to Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua when he was the government spokesman.

Mbai resigned from the police to join politics.

Mbai was Monday on July 3, 2023, caught on camera slapping a Kenya Power engineer while threatening to shoot him for disconnecting his power line.

In a now-viral video doing rounds on social media, the MP can be seen hurling insults at the Kenya Power officers before repeatedly slapping one of them during the incident which took place on Monday.

In response to the incident, agitated KPLC workers staged a peaceful protest from the company's offices in Epza to Kitengela police station Wednesday, condemning the incident.

It is alleged that the visit of the electricity workers was prompted by an outcry from the neighbourhood, where it was reported that the electricity had become dim and faulty.

A massive illegal connection to the MP's house was allegedly found.

Kenya Power officials were adamant that power to the MP’s home had been connected illegally affecting neighbouring homesteads.

Mbai instead intimidated the officers while invoking President William Ruto's name claiming the president had given directives that those found with illegal connections be metered before he attacked the official.

He presented himself to Kitengela police station Wednesday before recording a statement with the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

He was released and is expected to be arraigned for assault in Kajiado.

The KPLC officers managed to disconnect the power line on Tuesday after arriving on the premises alongside the police.
