Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has commissioned two wetlands in Marsabit, rehabilitated by the National Environment Management Authority.

"Commissioned Tiniqo and Horri Gudha wetlands in North Horr, Marsabit, rehabilitated by Nema," Tuya said in a tweet.

Tuya said her ministry is prioritising the restoration of wetlands to act as sources of livelihood for the people.

"We are prioritising restoration of wetlands through fencing and tree planting especially in our Arid and Semi-Arid Lands because of their immense potential as sources of livelihood for our communities," she said.

"We can plant trees around wetlands all year round and with the Green Army, we shall shift from just planting to actually nurturing our trees to maturity."

The CS also awarded certificates of green conduct to community environmental champions.

Tuya is in Marsabit for a two-day working visit.

She was set to inspect wetland restoration projects implemented by Nema in Kalacha, Hurri Gudha, Loiyangalani and North Horr.

On May 18, Tuya unveiled Kenya's wetlands restoration strategy in Nairobi and called for more participation of local communities including youth, women and children in environmental conservation activities.

The CS said her ministry had prioritised wetlands restoration as part of the government's flagship project of expanding Kenya's tree cover by growing 15 billion trees by 2032.
