Kenyan nurses and midwives interested in working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can now submit their applications.

This is after the Ministry of Labour called for qualified nurses and midwives to make their applications through the National Employment Authority (NEA) online portal.

The PS State Department for Labour and Skills Development Geoffrey Kaituko said the contracts will be for a period of one year and renewed annually.

This comes after a recent visit led by Labour CS Florence Bore to Saudi Arabia which has led to bi-weekly meetings between the Ministry of Labour and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) to ensure safe and productive labour migration.

According to Kaituko, the collaboration between the two governments has facilitated employment of thousands of Kenyans in various economic sectors in the KSA which has expressed willingness to recruit additional healthcare workers from Kenya.

“The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection requests for Expression of Interest from qualified Kenyans for employment in the KSA as Nursing and Midwifery professionals notably nursing and medical, surgical, adult ICU, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Newborn Intensive Care Unit and Midwifery,” the PS said.

In March, Kaituko disclosed the government was planning to export more skilled labourers and not just domestic workers.

He said the government is committed to opening up more opportunities in other continents.

"Most of our workers are domestic employees who go to the Gulf countries, now we want to expand the access to more countries," Kaituko said.

He said there are more than 170,000 Kenyans working in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries.
