Six killed in mob lynching incidents countrywide

Police term the trend criminal and want suspects handed over to police

Police are investigating at least six cases of mob justice that were reported in separate parts of the country.

Mob lynching is deemed criminal and police warn those behind them they will be arrested and prosecuted.

The first incident happened in Nyeri where two men were lynched by a mob in Nyaribo area in a botched robbery.

Police said they were called and informed the two bodies were lying dead with visible injuries 50 meters apart.

The locals said the two were among a group of criminal gangs that had been terrorizing members of the public and had been involved in breaking and stealing in Nyaribo.

They were chased and stoned to death.

In Kisumu West, a man was lynched after he assaulted and injured another one in a fight.

Irate members of the public cornered the suspect while in his house and subjected him to mob injustice, killing him.

In Itumbi village, Mukurweini, a 33-year-old man was beaten by a mob but was later saved by police after he was accused of assaulting his wife.

In Waruku, Dagorreti, a man aged 24 was lynched by a mob after he was accused of stealing from a house.

Police said a six kilogram of gas cylinder, a television set and a pair of scissors were recovered at the scene.

In Matete area, Kakamega, an unknown man was found dead along Webuye-Eldoret road after being stoned by a mob.

The body was moved to Webuye County Hospital morgue pending autopsy and identification.

Cases of mob lynching have been on the rise amid calls to address the trend. Police record up to two cases daily.

Police spokeswoman Resla Onyango termed the cases criminal and urged that those arrested or accused of crimes be surrendered to authorities for processing.

“The suspects should be surrendered to police who will investigate and take necessary action. No one should lynch a suspect,” she said.
