Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has called out his Nairobi counterpart Edwin Sifuna labelling him a "coward".

Khalwale who together with Sifuna featured in a TV interview on Thursday said the ODM secretary general's failure to show up for Azimio protests on Wednesday proved that he is a "coward".

He further described the first-term senator as unelectable saying he is a beneficiary of tribal permutations that preceded the 2022 elections.

"If Sifuna would be at the frontline of all these demos taking place, he would have been arrested and taken to court. They hide behind the others during the protests as they wait to talk about heading to court," he said in an interview on Citizen TV.

"Sifuna is not electable, he is a beneficiary of ethnic mobilization in Nairobi. He was elected to mobilize the Luhya community yet had been defeated thrice in his own backyard, Bungoma," Khalwale added.

But in a rejoinder, Sifuna trashed comments by Khalwale saying he has led protests before.

"I have been arrested before for leading protests, Khalwale state the facts. I have always led many protests from the front and my coat is common out here. We don't go for demos to be arrested," he said.

On losing elections, Sifuna denied such and said the number of votes he got in Nairobi is a testament to his electability.

"Talking of losing three elections, I am the age of some of Khalwale's children and could not have run for three elections. I received the highest number of votes for Nairobi's senatorial seat," Sifuna said.

The Azimio protests on Wednesday saw several lives lost and properties destroyed.

Sifuna said the protests are no longer about Raila but about the cost of living that has made lives unbearable.

The ODM SG said they will continue holding demos until the government listens to their concerns.
