A man and his wife have been detained over the murder of a co-wife who was stabbed to death in their house in Zimmerman, Nairobi.

Police say Kilonzo Muinde and his second wife Margaret Mutiso have some information that can help in the probe into the death of Lucy Mboli.

Mboli, 25, is Muinde's first wife. Margeret is her co-wife.

Mboli had stab wounds in the chest and neck when she was rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching, Research and Referral Hospital on Sunday at night by her husband.

She was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police believe Mboli was murdered by her husband and co-wife.

They have asked the court to allow them to detain the two suspects for two weeks to enable them to complete investigations.

It is only Mboli, her husband Muinde, co-wife Margaret and Margaret's five-month-old child who were in the house when the incident happened.

Police say it is for this reason that they believe the couple know something about the murder.

Muinde rushed Mboli to the hospital aboard a taxi, in which she succumbed to her injuries.

Police arrived at the hospital and later asked the man to take them to his house for a search.

He told police he had arrived at his Zimmerman home with Mboli on Saturday night and found the second wife in that house.

The second wife, Margaret, lives in Muinde's rural home in Kitui. She had come visiting.

Her presence prompted a brief quarrel between the two women before Muinde intervened. The situation however remained tense.

Muinde told police after he managed to calm the situation, he slept with the second wife, with Mboli sleeping on a three-seater sofa set in the sitting room.

According to the man, he later heard Mboli calling for help and rushed to the sitting room, where he found her in a pool of blood on the floor.

It was then he decided to rush her to hospital.

At the scene, police recovered the murder weapon, a blue-handled kitchen knife with blood stains, a cooking stick and one grey sweater soiled with blood on the left hand.

Police also recovered a white-flowered pillow stained with blood, which the deceased was sleeping on.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said they suspect the woman was killed in the house.

“We are talking to the couple as part of the probe into the murder. This looks like pure murder, and we have the right suspects for now,” Bungei said.

Mboli's body was moved to the mortuary, where an autopsy is planned as part of the probe into the murder.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the death of a 26-year-old man who was found dead in his house in Kawangware, Nairobi.

The man had earlier on complained of not feeling well before he retired to bed.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy.
