Kisumu county commissioner Alanson Hussein had a rough time trying to convince protesters to stop demonstrations.

The commissioner told the protesters that frequent protests have turned Kisumu into a ghost town, and urged them to remain calm and ensure businesses resume.

“I have come to talk to you, Kisumu is ours, we are the residents and the ones doing business here to earn a living. If nothing is going on in this town it means even you will not get something to eat,” he said.

“I want to ask you please, let us maintain calm for business to pick."

However, before he could finish, he was talked down by the protesters who told him off, saying it was impossible to stay off protests with the current pangs of hunger.

The hostility forced the commissioner to end his visit and speed off in his vehicle and some followed him, urging him to leave.

Speaking to journalists separately in the Jua Kali area of Kisumu, Hussein said the city has remained relatively calm on the second day of the protests.

"We have pockets of places where protesters have blocked roads but our officers are very alert, vigilant, they are opening up all road blocks to make the city accessible,” he said.
