Elderly persons have a reason to smile after the government announced Friday the release of Sh8.3 billion under the Inua Jamii program.

The funds, Labor Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore said, cover four months from March to June.

Each of the beneficiaries is set to receive Sh8, 000.

"The payment of beneficiaries will begin today, July 2023, " a statement from the CS reads.

Another Sh11.2 billion for nutrition improvement through cash and health education (NICHE), which is a complementary programme has also been disbursed.

Some 1,042,854 elderly persons are listed as regular Inua Jamii beneficiaries while 5,607 are classified as NICHE beneficiaries.

The money, the CS disclosed, has been credited to all banks with Cooperative, Equity and National banks and KWFT account holders are set to receive it Friday.

Those with accounts in Post Bank are set to collect on Saturday while for KCB, the money is set to reflect on Monday.

NICHE project combines social protection, nutrition and child protection aspects in programming.

It is being piloted in five arid and semi-arid land counties of Kitui, Kilifi, Marsabit and West Pokot.

The program targets Inua Jamii and hunger safety net programme households with children between 0-36 months and pregnant mothers.

Bore has also expressed the government's commitment to ensuring that the most vulnerable members of society are "cushioned and their livelihoods improved".
