Azimio leader Raila Odinga has noted that his Tumechoka Citizen's Initiative has collected up to 8.5 million signatures.

Raila claimed that the 8.5 million signatures so far collected are more than the 7.1 million votes that President William Ruto won in the August 9 polls last year.

"Mr Ruto according to Chebukati supposedly got 7.1 million votes, already we have over 8 million signatures," Raila said.

The ODM party leader launched the signature collection exercise on July 11.

He said the signatures are aimed at expressing dissatisfaction with the current government.

"This is part of the campaign of resistance, the civil disobedience and citizens’ actions that we have decided to pursue to force Ruto and his regime to respect and listen to the people," Raila said when he launched the tumechoka portal.

Raila hopes to collect up to 10 million signatures.

Before the signature collection exercise began, Azimio Co-principal Martha Karua said the signatures will serve as a tally of Kenyans who support  Azimio's protests against the government.

“Those signatures are a body count of people exercising their will directly. They are not for taking to any institution. It is just a body count of people supporting the cause," Karua said during an interview at Spice FM.
