The Opposition in the Senate has asked the House to probe the motive behind the withdrawal of the security detail attached to Azimio leaders.

Minority Leader Steward Madzayo who sought a statement from the Standing Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations, wants the government to explain why it recalled security of opposition luminaries.

“Explain whether the security detail attached to the leaders and Members of Parliament is a right or favour bestowed upon them,” he said.

He further wants the State to explain why the security was recalled without official communication to Parliament and/or the Clerk or Speaker.

Madzayo wants the committee to recommend immediate measures to further prevent security detail attached to leaders and Members of Parliament from being withdrawn.

The State withdrew security officers attached to top Azimio leaders over anti-government protests.

Governors allied to Azimio leader Raila Odinga, among them Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu), Ochillo Ayacko (Migori) and Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) are among leaders whose security was withdrawn.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure had warned that the government would not allow the leaders to hold protests while enjoying State security.

Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi claimed that more than 50 MPs allied to Azimio have also had their security recalled and ordered to report to Parliament Police Station.
