Kenyans seeking to fly to Mumbai have a reason to smile after IndiGo Air announced the start of direct flights from Nairobi.
IndiGo Air is set to begin its air travels on August 5.
The new route is the carrier’s 27th international destination.
Airline's head of global sales Vinay Malhotra said Kenya is the first destination country in Sub-Saharan Africa and encompasses Savannah, Lakelands, as well as mountain highlands.
“With India emerging as Kenya’s third-largest trading partner and witnessing increased investments, this new air route will further enhance our economic ties too,” he said.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and his Tourism counterpart Penina Malonza will on Saturday preside over the reception of the maiden flight from Mumbai-Nairobi at the JKIA.
Also expected will be the High Commissioner in IHC Namgya C. Khampa, Kenya Tourist Board chair Francis Gichaba and CEO John Chirchir, KAA managing director Alex Gitari, KCAA Director General Emile Arao and Director General Air Transport Nicholas Bodo among others.
Chirchir has termed the entry of the airline as a milestone in their efforts to increase the number of visitors from India to Kenya.
IndiGo has been ranked as the 4th most punctual airline globally in 2018, 6th most punctual airline globally in 2019 and 3rd most punctual airline in 2021 by OAG Punctuality League.
IndiGo was founded in 2006 as a private company by Rahul Bhatia of InterGlobe Enterprises and Rakesh Gangwal.
