The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the expansion of the Bomas of Kenya to an ultra-modern conference centre.

A dispatch from the Cabinet said the facility will be rebranded into Bomas International Convention Centre.

"To position Kenya as the destination of choice for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) tourism, and to cement her place as a diplomatic and commercial hub, Cabinet approved the establishment of the Bomas International Convention Centre (BICC)," the dispatch from the Cabinet read.

The BICC will be an ultra-modern convention that will feature a conference centre, a presidential pavilion and at least five hotels.

"This State initiative, fifty years after the groundbreaking of Kenya’s first international convention centre, is expected to further the growth of conference tourism, hospitality, and event and aviation industries," the dispatch read.

According to the Cabinet, the move is in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda that anchors the Kenya Kwanza manifesto.

Currently, Bomas of Kenya is a tourist village in Langata that displays traditional villages belonging to several Kenyan tribes.

It is also home to one of the largest auditoriums in Africa that has been serving as the National Tallying Centre for presidential elections since 2013.
