There was drama in Kerugoya early mornings of Monday after residents blocked Kenya Dairy officials from arresting local milk vendors.

The residents decried harassment from the officials saying that no formal procedure was followed in the arrests.

"Kama wanataka hizo sheria zao zifuatwe, waite hawa ambao wanauza maziwa, na washika dau wote waitwe, tukae kwa kikao kimoja ndiposa waseme jinsi wanataka tufuate sheria," one of the resident said.

This is loosely translated to: "If they want us to follow the law as they are saying, they should call all the milk vendors and other stakeholders to a meeting, and elaborate the law to all of us".

The residents also said that the officials were being unfair as they only target Kerugoya and not other areas within the county.

"Kwani ni Kerugoya tu ndio wanashika watu, Kutus wanauza, Kagumo maziwa inauzwa, Kerugoya tu ndio wameona wakuje washika wanbiashara," he added.

(Why are they only arresting Kerugoya vendors, there are several vendors in adjacent areas, including Kutus, Kagumo, and others. They have just spotted Kerugoya for no apparent reason)

Early this month, President William Ruto urged milk stakeholders to come up with plans to do away with brokers, and cartels in the milk industry to enable all farmers to collect their correct dues.

"Without the farmers who produce milk, we cannot have any other stakeholders in the sector. If farmers are not making money, every other person will be jobless. The farmer is king."
