National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security will on Monday undertake a fact-finding visit to the Department of Immigration at Nyayo House.

Members of the committee will be seeking to access the capacity of the department to process passports against rising demand.

MPs will also be seeking to establish if measures have been put in place to ensure passport application, processing and issuance are transparent, fast secure and corruption-free.

They will further seek to establish how the Department addresses complaints from members of the public.

“The committee will thereafter address the press on their findings,” a press invite from the committee said.

On September 1, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said the government was committed to clearing the backlog at the department and to stream services going forward.

The CS added that more staffers had been stationed to help clear the pending passport application processes.

Kindiki said he will ensure that passport applicants receive their documents within a week.

“We are working to make sure that applicants get their passports within a week’s time and if it is an emergency, we are planning for applicants to receive it within 24 hours,” he said.

He said a special counter has been added for expectant and lactating mothers, who, Kindiki said are not supposed to line up for a longer period.

The CS said a Sh1.3 billion government allocation will ramp up operations at the Immigration Department.
