Atwoli praises Ruto for 'well-organised' Africa Climate Summit

The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) SG Francis Atwoli has praised President William Ruto for what he termed as a well-organised Africa Climate Summit.

Atwoli on Wednesday said under Ruto’s leadership, the country has become a multilateral capital of Africa.

His statement comes as the Summit which started on Monday at the Kenyatta International Conference comes to an end.

“On behalf of Kenyan workers allow me to Congratulate President Ruto for the well-organised Africa Climate Summit.

He said as a workers’ leader who has been going to Geneva, Switzerland to attend numerous sessions of ILO for nearly three decades now, he was pleased with the transformation under Ruto.

“I am proud of the transformative work by the President in redefining and repositioning Nairobi’s place in Africa,” he said.

"The African leaders Nairobi declaration on climate change and Call to Action will equal be etched in the annals of history.” 

Kenya this week played host to several heads of state and over 10,000 delegates, making Kenya the first country to hold such a forum in collaboration with the African Union.

The 2023 summit is themed: ‘Driving green growth and climate finance solutions for Africa and the world’.

Among key issues that are being discussed at the forum are how to tackle the increased exposure of emitters, investing in nature and biodiversity, solutions to climate change, and climate change financing for Africa.

Represented countries made several commitments geared towards fighting climate change in the world.

This culminated in the adoption of the Nairobi declaration, in the presence of other global leaders, intergovernmental organizations, Regional Economic Communities, and United Nations Agencies.
