Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has said he will not be intimidated to drop the proposal he made in parliament over the increment of a presidential term.

Speaking when he addressed the media at the Parliament buildings, Cherargei said his proposal was made for the interest of the people of Kenya.

“I am urging the Dialogic Committee not to be swayed by emotional blackmail. In five years this country is in a campaign mood, one year is litigation and the next year is for forming the government. This leaves only three years for work,” Cherargei said.

He added that the individuals who have been criticising him for making the proposal are lazy thinkers, saying Kenyans should be let to decide on his proposal.

“Those criticising me are lazy thinkers, let them bring their opinion on the table for discussion that is the beauty of democracy. Let Kenyans make the decision."

The UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala had through a statement dismissed Cherargei's proposal saying it is not the position of the party or that of the President.

"The UDA Party respects and upholds the Senator's personal views but particularly on the referenced subject, those views do not reflect the perspectives of the UDA Party and/or its Party Leader, President William Ruto," he said.

“The President solemnly swore to respect, uphold and defend the constitution which is abundantly clear and categorical on the Presidential term.”

According to the former Kakamega senator, the government is currently focused on delivering on its key promises to Kenyans.

“Respectfully, therefore, the term limit debate is superfluous and peripheral.”
