Chiefs have been directed to spearhead the tree-planting activities in their localities during Monday’s national exercise.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and his Forestry counterpart Githonga Mugambi said Sunday in a joint statement that apart from the earmarked areas at the counties, they are putting focus on the locations.

“Chiefs will take charge of coordinating the distribution of seedlings and mobilizing residents in their localities to actively participate,” the statement reads in part.

This, they noted, is to ensure the success of the “crucial exercise” and to capitalize on the opportunity up to the grassroots.

“This way, we will be able to maximize this day to grow as many trees as possible as we work towards attaining our ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032,” they have noted.

According to the principal secretaries, a well-coordinated effort between the administrators and the public is vital to achieving the government’s goal of planting 150 million trees by the end of Monday’s exercise.

They have also encouraged Kenyans to visit their nearest Chief’s offices to acquire the tree seedlings while urging them to also take good care of them to maturity.

“We call on the public to actively participate in nurturing the planted trees and taking ownership of national day to ensure long-term benefits for our environment,” the statement further reads.

President William Ruto is set to lead the exercise at Kiu Wetland in Makindu, Makueni.

It will also happen in each of the counties and will be championed by Cabinet Secretaries, hosted by respective governors and supported by their PSs, county commissioners and other senior state officials.
