Two cops arrested in Trans Nzoia after leaving exam centre for drinking spree

The officers in Trans Nzoia delivered exam papers and proceeded to a nearby center only to emerge while drunk.

Two police officers are being held at Geta police station in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia for alleged neglect of duty.

The officers are said to have been deployed to provide security in the ongoing KCSE examination when they abandoned their duties and left for a drinking spree.

According to police, the two delivered the Geography paper I examination papers at the school and immediately proceeded to a nearby shopping centre only to emerge later while drunk.

“The matter was later reported by the examination centre manager while they were escorting the said exams back to the container where the officers were arrested and placed in custody to face disciplinary action,” reads the police report.

They are set to face charges of drinking intoxicating liquor in uniform when actively engaged on duty in a public place and leaving the place of duty without being regularly relieved.

The incident adds to a myriad of cases which have been reported across the country during the ongoing examination.

On Monday, an officer who was escorting exam papers to Mahero Secondary School in Alego Usonga, Siaya, was killed by unknown assailants as his colleague sustained injuries.

The centre manager fled for safety, and the thugs who were armed with crude weapons killed the officer before taking off with a firearm.

The officers had just alighted from a school bus that had ferried them to pick up the examination papers from Siaya County headquarters.

The exams which started on October 23 will end this Friday with Physics practical. 

On Tuesday, the learners will sit Business Studies Paper 1 and Agriculture Paper 1 while Geography Paper 2 and Physics Paper 2 are set for Wednesday.

On Thursday, the candidates will sit Business Paper 2 and Agriculture Paper 2.
