Detectives on Wednesday recovered 4,920 pieces of 250ml bottles of counterfeit alcoholic drinks in a raid at a store along Kirinyaga Road in Nairobi.

They were assisted by KRA in the operation following the ongoing crackdown on high-level tax evasion by liquor dealers

The recovery which comprises mixed brands of illicit liquor with an estimated value of Sh984,000 was escorted to a KRA warehouse, and a seizure notice was issued to the suspect.

"As the crackdown christened Operation Uchumi heightens, further investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the counterfeit drinks."

The operation came barely 24 hours after police seized a consignment of counterfeit alcoholic drinks in Juja, Kiambu County.

According to DCI, a contingent of officers raided a house within Kenyatta Road area where over 2,500 bottles of counterfeit spirits, 24,000 pieces of counterfeit Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) stamps and 40 litres of ethanol were seized.

“Over 2,500 bottles of counterfeit spirits destined for the local market were recovered, following a meticulous operation conducted by detectives from the Economic and Commercial Crimes Unit and officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority,” DCI said.
