It was a historic moment in Wajir town on Tuesday when Governor Ahmed Abdullahi issued title deeds to 200 residents during the Jamhuri Day celebrations.

Amina Hassan, one of the beneficiaries, could not hide her joy, saying that the issuance of the title deeds could not have come at a much better time.

“Today being Jamhuri day I feel like I have been born again. It is a very special day. Having a title deed for my piece of land after decades without this important document is something that I have been waiting to happen for a very long time,” said Hassan.

Governor Abdullahi said that his administration was processing a total of 10,000 title deeds to give the residents.

“To this effect, I urge all the residents within Wajir Municipality to liaise with Departments of Lands, Spatial Planning and Urban Development to fast-track the verification process to enable more residents to have ownership documents for their parcels of land,” he said.

The governor used the opportunity to highlight some of the achievements his administration has made in key sectors among them health, water, education and livestock.

In the education sector, Abdullahi announced that the county bursary had been increased from Sh100 million to Sh150 million which will be disbursed before learning resumes. He called on parents and guardians to take the opportunity and apply.

He further disclosed the resumption of the school feeding program in all ECDE centres.

“I wish to call upon the great people of Wajir, to apply for the 35,550 teaching vacancies announced by the Teachers Service Commission before the set deadline of Friday,” he said.

In the livestock sector, the Governor said that in the next few days, his administration shall deliver 22, 000 bags of livestock feeds, adding that they expect another consignment of 4,000 bags which we have ordered through the Emergency Desert Locust Response Project (EDLRP).

In partnership with food security and livelihood partners, the county is also planning to distribute 3,000 bags of range cubes to 1,500 households.

This, he said, is a continuation of the initial phase of the intervention during which 4,000 households received 7,200 bags of range cubes.

In the healthcare department which the governor noted remains one of his key priority areas, he said that several strides have been made, among them reconstituting the hospital management and the County Health Management Committee.

“We have also delivered drugs and essential items to our medical facilities. Our county has not only cleared KEMSA's pending bill of Sh53 million but has also procured pharmaceuticals and non-pharmaceuticals for all our 122 health facilities and 258 outreach sites at a total cost of Sh211 Million,” he said.

He said that renovation of the hospital has started, noting that all this was geared towards upgrading it to a level 5 facility.

In the water sector, the governor said since he took office the water services department has managed to repair water bowsers which has as a result led to the supply of water to 155 centers through water trucking.

"The prolonged drought, which resulted from four failed seasons of rainfall, required our urgent intervention. As a result, through emergency coordination with all partners, from the national government, humanitarian partners, and various well-wishers, under the steering committees, we joined hands to save our people’s lives and their livelihood; their livestock," the Governor said
