Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua celebrated the new year on Monday with prisoners at the King'ong'o GK Prison in Nyeri.

Gachagua was accompanied by his spouse Dorcas Gachagua.

Others were Correctional Services principal secretary Salome Muhia Beacco, Commissioner General of Prisons John Warioba, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and Senator Wahome Wamatinga.

The clergy were also present.

Gachagua said as a nation they have made great progress in reforming the prisons.

"Beyond positively transforming the lives of inmates in character and prepare them for a productive life and rejoining their families after sentences, we are investing in development of skills in diverse professions," he said.

He stated, "Behind the bars, lie immense talent and abilities that have to be harnessed and exploited as part of fulfilling the aspirations of the Ruto administration's plan".
