Two people have died in a grisly accident along the busy Nairobi - Mombasa highway.
The duo an unknown woman aged around 35 years and an unknown man aged around 40 years died on the spot after their car plunged into River Athi on Thursday night.
Athi River South subcounty police commander Jos Mudavadi said the self-involved accident happened at Crystal Rivers Mall bridge at about 9.30 pm.
It was reported to Athi River police station as a self-involved fatal injury road traffic accident at around 10.00 pm on Thursday.
"The accident occurred today at around 9.30 pm and was reported to the station at around 10.00 pm along the Nairobi - Mombasa highway at Crystal River Mall bridge. It involved a motor vehicle of Nissan Xtrail make being driven by one unknown female adult aged about 35 years and was carrying one unknown male adult passenger aged around 40 years," Mudavadi told the Star by phone hours after the incident.
Mudavadi said the vehicle was moving from the Mombasa general direction to the Nairobi general direction when the incident occurred.
"On reaching the location of the accident, the driver lost control and hit the bridge guard rails plunging into the river. Due to the impact, both the driver and passenger died on the spot," Mudavadi said.
He said traffic officers from Athi River police station rushed to the scene, processed it and removed the bodies to Shalom Community Hospital mortuary in Athi River.
The wreckage was removed from the river and towed to the Athi River police station awaiting inspection.
Police have launched investigations into the incident.
