Kamworor to face Bekele-led team at London Marathon

Kamworor is expected to lead the Kenyan charge for a clean sweep in this year’s event.

Kenyan athlete Geoffrey Kamworor is set to face stiff competition from Kenenisa Bekele-led Ethiopian team in the London Marathon slated for April.

Kamworor,30, is expected to lead the Kenyan charge for a clean sweep in this year’s event.

Bekele, who is among the fastest marathoners in history, will be in the company of fellow Ethiopian runners including New York City Marathon champion Tamirat Tola and Mosinet Geremew. 

Bekele is the world masters category record holder after posting a new mark of 2:04:19 at the 2023 Valencia Marathon.

Alexander Mutiso, who was the runner-up at the 2023 Valencia Marathon in a time of 2:03:11, will be the other Kenyan in the race.

Kamworor won his first World Marathon Major race at the 2017 New York City Marathon and replicated the feat at the same event in 2019.

He is a three-time World Half Marathon champion having won it in 2014,  2016, and 2018. He won the senior men's 12km race at the World Cross Country Championships, twice in 2015 and 2017.

He is the former world half marathon record holder, having won the Copenhagen in a time of 58:01 in September 2019. His record stood until December 2020 when it was bested by Kibiwott Kandie at the 2020 Valencia Half Marathon.
