Some of the Kenyatta University students injured in the Monday evening accident in Maungu, Taita Tavet county will be evacuated to Nairobi for further specialist treatment.

This is after at least 11 KU students died in a grisly road accident involving their school bus and a trailer along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

Forty-two students sustained serious injuries while four had slight wounds.

The university Vice Chancellor Paul Wainanina in a statement on Tuesday said the students will be evacuated after an assessment on their status.

This is after the university dispatched a team from the Main Campus and Mombasa Campus to the accident scene on Monday night.

The team which comprises two doctors, medical personnel, university security officers as well as students and staff wellness officers is expected to assess the situation, assist survivors and provide an accurate report on the incident.

"At the moment we are not able to share specific numbers and or names but can confirm that there were several fatalities involved," Wainanina said.

"The university will provide a more comprehensive report later today a information becomes available," he added.

Wainaina while condoling with the families of those who had lost their loved ones during the accident further noted that the university had set up a help desk to offer support to those affected by the incident.

The help desk has been set up at the Business Students Services Centre (BSSC) Room 151, he said.

The university has also released a helpline number 0202310709 or 0723352 483 to respond to queries and offer support and assistance during this challenging time.

"On behalf of the university council and the university management board, I wish to convey our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones in this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all," the VC said.

Confirming the incident, Voi subcounty police commander Ibrahim Daffala said 10 students died on the spot while another one breathed his last in the hospital.

The school bus was carrying public health students who were heading to Mombasa for an academic trip.

The trailer was heading to Nairobi at the time the accident occurred.

The school bus was carrying 58 passengers.

About four students escaped unhurt. They were taken to Maungu Police Station awaiting further processes.

Tens of occupants of the ill-fated bus who were injured were rushed to the Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi.
