The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has arrested excess passengers aboard public service vehicles in Thika, Kiambu.

In a post on X, NTSA said motorists should avoid boarding overloaded vehicles to prevent inconveniences.

β€œTo avoid any inconveniences, do not board an overloaded vehicle,” the transport and safety authority said on X.

Vehicles without proper documents including inspection and road service license (RSL) were also impounded.

NTSA's principal communication officer Anthony Nyongesa said the crackdown was a routine exercise that is taking place across the country.

The transport authority and the police have recently intensified a crackdown against traffic offenders, following an increased number of road accidents across the country.

On Saturday, NTSA also impounded a 14-seater matatu that was carrying 31 students from Tharaka Nithi.

According to NTSA, the vehicle driver managed to escape arrest.

NTSA also arrested several pedestrians who failed to use the designated walkways and footbridges while crossing roads in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Statistics released by NTSA this month showed that the number of road accidents in the country between January 1 to March 20 had risen by 7 per cent compared to a similar period last year.

Two weeks ago, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen while appearing before the Senate plenary revealed that measures have been put in place to save Kenyans on the road.
