Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has directed schools' Boards of Management to prepare status reports of their institutions as rains continue to cause devastation across the country.

In a memo to regional, county and subcounty directors of education, Machogu said the reports should be submitted to respective County Education Boards by May 8, 2024.

“These reports should detail all relevant matters, such as any damage caused to school infrastructure due to the adverse weather conditions and outline mitigation measures,” he said.

Machogu issued the directive soon after President William Ruto directed the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening of schools for Second Term until further notice.

He said the directive was informed by the prevailing heavy rains and flooding affecting most parts of the country.

“In the case of learners that had already reported to school, the school management shall retain them in school and ensure their safety and security, except only where the conditions allow for the safe return to their homes,” Machogu said.

The CS said the reports by the boards are critical for, among others, engaging with the National-Government Constituency Development Fund on the restoration of the damaged infrastructure.

He further directed County Education Boards to convene urgent meetings to assess the situation in their respective areas and submit comprehensive reports to the Cabinet Secretary by May 10, 2024.

“The Regional Directors of Education shall continually provide updates on the status of learning institutions in their respective areas using the provided templates," he directed.

Machogu further said all field education officers working in areas where schools are hosting displaced persons should liaise with the local National Government Administration Officers to immediately identify alternative accommodation for affected persons to ensure the facilities are available for normal learning activities,” he said.

The Met department said in a week-long forecast on Friday that the heavy rains are expected to continue pounding various parts of the country.

The weatherman advised the public to stay weather aware and warned Nairobi residents to brace for very heavy rains on Friday.
