Prosecution says the ODPP would need more time to respond to Kengere's plea

A 29-year-old man charged with impersonating former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Facebook to defraud unsuspecting members of the public has applied for a plea bargain. 

John Kengere is accused of creating a Facebook account using the name Mike Mbuvi Sonko Rescue Loans without the authority of the former governor.

He is said to have committed the offence on September 15, 2023, at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya.

Kangere who appeared before Milimani senior principal magistrate Gilbert Shikwe sought to have a plea bargain with the prosecution.

However, the prosecution told the court that the office of the Director of Public Prosecution would need more time to respond to Kengere's plea. 

The DPP said they will respond next week.

The case will be mentioned on the same day on May 13.

Kengere was charged in December last year where he denied the charges of cybersquatting. 

The accused was arrested in Kisii's Riokindo ward by DCI officers after investigations.

He is accused of allegedly swindling the public money in a fake educational loan scheme.
