We'll plant 7 million trees before end of rainy season – Ababu

This initiative is part of the government's ambitious plan to achieve 30 per cent forest cover by 2032.

Youths Affairs, Arts and Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has said they will plant seven million trees before the end of the rainy season.

The CS, ministry staff, agencies and community leaders on May 27 spearheaded a tree planting exercise at Banadenga-Chepsait forest station in Mr Elgon and a team at Moi International Sporting Centre.

"The Ministry has adopted Mt Elgon in Bungoma, Kasarani Botanical Garden Project in Nairobi and Arabuko Sokoke ecosystem in Kilifi," Namwamba said.

The ministry  has so far planted 3.8 million seedlings as a contribution to the national tree planting drive towards 15 billion trees in 10 years,"

The Environment Ministry said that planting and enhancing the survival of the seedlings by fencing and watering the seedlings using local youths will create employment.

"The Ministry of Youth, Creative Economy and Sports has an annual target of 1 million trees. At the core of the new approach is the enhanced survival rate of seedlings through fencing of planted sites and watering of young trees using local youths, creating jobs in line with the Government's Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda," the ministry added.

The accelerated tree-growing programme led by Cabinet Secretaries enters the 3rd week today.

To facilitate this massive tree-planting campaign, each cabinet secretary has been assigned specific forests and wetlands to oversee monthly planting activities.
