Huduma Kenya has explained why there have been delays in issuing national identification cards to Kenyans.

The agency on Thursday said there were delays caused by a court order that stopped production of new IDs.

"We are experiencing delays due to the high court order that blocked the production of new digital ID cards/Maisha cards," Huduma Kenya said.

Huduma Kenya gave assurance that Kenyans will soon start receiving their new digital IDs as the issue has been resolved.

" The issue has been resolved, and we are working to reduce the backlog and have your ID ready soon," Huduma Kenya said.

In December of 2023, the High Court froze the issuance of ID cards, also known as Maisha Number, following an application filed by Katiba Institute.

As of April 23, Huduma Kenya said more than 138,000 Identity cards are uncollected across various Huduma Centres.

Huduma urged the public to make a point of collecting the essential documents.

"Over 138K uncollected IDs, 54K birth certificates and over 45K uncollected Smart DLs at Huduma Centres. Pitia Huduma Centres uchukue document yako," the Centre said on X.
