The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a manhunt for game hunters in Garissa county.

Police in Daadab's Dagahaley area of Garissa county, are in pursuit of four men who wrestled a giraffe on Tuesday evening and allegedly killed it for game meat.

Sleuths from Dagahale Police Station swiftly acted on information shared by residents at Kumahumato village and rushed to the scene where they intercepted a vehicle loaded with the animal.

"The four-game hunters scampered into nearby thickets to evade arrest," investigators said.

"The abandoned vehicle was towed to the police station and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers were informed."

The vehicle was impounded and the game meat was preserved as an exhibit.

"Meanwhile, a report from NTSA records pointing to the owner of the vehicle has been obtained, and necessary actions are underway," they added.

As part of efforts to stop poaching, Kenya has started using high-tech surveillance equipment, including drones, to track poachers and keep tabs on wildlife.

KWS and stakeholders have put in place mechanisms to eradicate all forms of wildlife crime, particularly poaching.

These mechanisms include enhanced community education, interagency collaboration, and intensive intelligence-led operations, among others.
