Police in Busia are searching for two suspected drug traffickers who escaped arrest on Wednesday.

The suspects are said to have abandoned seven sacks of refined bhang after sighting approaching police officers.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in a statement on Thursday said the bhang is estimated to have a street value of Sh13 million.

"While on routine beat and patrol duties in the wee hours of the day at Ratike area along the Busia-Kisumu road, the police officers stumbled upon the haul of narcotics beside the road, supposedly abandoned when its owners sighted the law enforcers," DCI said.

According to the DCI, a quick search within the area showed signs of disturbed vegetation suggesting the suspects were monitoring police activities hoping the retrieve the bags later.

The officers however waited at the location until a police vehicle arrived and transported the sacks to Busia police station.

The consignment is being held as evidence.

"With the exhibit secured, the officers have embarked on hunting down the daring suspects," DCI said.

The DCI called upon the public to anonymously report any cases through calling 0800 722 203.
