Attorney General Justin Muturi and Environment Cabinet Secretary on Monday spearheaded a tree planting in Kona Baridi, Ngong’, Kajiado County.
During the event, Muturi emphasised the importance of adhering to the Cabinet directive on tree planting, encouraging fellow colleagues to diligently observe their assigned tree planting days and contribute actively to the national reforestation efforts.
Tuya commended Muturi and the State Law Office for their exceptional progress in nurturing the trees, not merely planting them.
She highlighted the meticulous efforts by Muturi in fencing the land designated for his office, consistently participating in monthly tree planting activities every second Monday of the month.
“My office will soon issue a public notice regarding special use rights for communities residing near forests, detailing guidelines for grazing, beekeeping, and other forest-related activities,” she said.
Also present were Kajiado West MP George Sunkuyia, Solicitor General Shadrack Mose and National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) vice chairperson Sophia Matura.
Tuya also addressed concerns about the misuse of guidelines set for indigenous communities, noting instances of unauthorised leasing, cultivation, and construction within gazetted forests.
She affirmed that her office is committed to regulating these activities to protect and preserve forested areas.
Muturi announced a new initiative to empower local communities who have played a crucial role in maintaining previously planted trees.
He directed Mose to collaborate with the area chief to contract local residents, ensuring they are compensated for their efforts in caring for the newly planted trees.
“This initiative aims to sustain the health and growth of the trees planted today,” he stated.
In a call to action, Muturi urged lawyers and staff to mark their calendars for the next tree planting event on July 8, with an ambitious target of planting 3,000 seedlings.
The effort is part of the broader commitment to environmental stewardship and community involvement in reforestation.
