The Chief of Registrar Winfridah Mokaya has issued a statement on the shooting of a magistrate by a senior police officer at the Makadara Law Courts.

The senior police officer was Thursday shot and killed after he shot and wounded Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti.

Kivuti was shot in the court soon after she had delivered a ruling in a case involving the wife of the senior officer.

"During an open court session earlier today, the Magistrate cancelled the bond for an accused person who had jumped bond," Mokaya said.

She said the accused had failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond.

"Immediately this decision was pronounced, a person shot at the Magistrate and injured her on the hip," she said.

Mokaya said police officers at the scene responded and neutralised the shooter.

"..and the Magistrate was rushed to hospital for treatment," she said.

She said the preliminary reports indicated that the shooter is a police officer who is married to the accused.

"We wish our colleague a quick recovery. We also send our condolences to the family of the officer who lost his life in this unfortunate incident,' she said.

Mokaya assured Judicial officers of safety after the shooting of a magistrate in Makadara law courts.

"We would also like to assure all Judicial Officers, Staff and Court Users of their safety and security on all our premises," she said.

Mokaya said they will enhance security protocols for civilians visiting the courts as well as security officers.

"We wish our colleague a quick recovery. We also send our condolences to the family of the officer who lost his life in this unfortunate incident," she said.

"We urge for calm from all court users as our law enforcement agencies further investigate this incident."
