Two people have died in a grisly traffic accident along the busy Nairobi – Mombasa Highway.

The duo were passengers of a motor vehicle which got involved in an accident at Green Park Gardens area in Athi River, Machakos County on Saturday. The two died on the spot.

Athi River East subcounty police commander said the self-involved accident occurred at about 8.30 am.

It was reported to Athi River police station as a self-involved fatal road traffic accident at 9.00 am.

“It occurred today at about 8.30 am and reported to police at 9.00 am,” Mbae told the Star by phone shortly after the incident.

The police boss said the motor vehicle a Mercedes Benz Axor Tipper was being driven by one Charles Mungai towards Mombasa's general direction when the driver lost control and landed in a ditch leading to the deaths.

The driver sustained serious injuries on the head and was rushed to Shalom Community Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

“The driver lost control as he was negotiating a corner and in the process, the motor vehicle hit the raised right side of the road and eventually landed into a ditch. Due to the impact, the two adults both males of ages 28 and 30 years both died on the spot,” Mbae said.

Mbae said the motor vehicle was extensively damaged and was towed to Athi River police station pending inspection.

He said his officers visited and processed the scene of the incident before the motor vehicle was towed and the bodies removed to Shalom Community Hospital’s mortuary pending an autopsy.

The police chief said they had launched investigations into the incident.
