Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has confirmed that a peace concert in honour of protesters who died during protests against Finance Bill, 2024 will go ahead as planned.

In a statement, the Nairobi county boss reaffirmed that the concert will be held at Uhuru Park.

The park was an active crime scene due to recent vandalism, including the destruction of a mobile studio dedicated to recording artists.

Nonetheless, Sakaja said the concert will proceed once investigations are completed.

He emphasised that Uhuru Park is a public space and expressed his commitment to attend the event.

“Fees for the injured and deceased across county hospitals and mortuaries have been waived as a gesture of acknowledging the right to expression,” he announced.

Sakaja said he has given the green light for the youth to hold a memorial concert at Uhuru Park this Saturday.

Activist Boniface Mwangi had announced plans to have a concert on Saturday to honour those who died during last month's anti-government protests.

"We wanted to have a concert on Saturday. They should allow us to use Uhuru Park for the concert on Saturday to honour those the government murdered. Sakaja can we get access to Uhuru Park on Saturday as is? Who do we speak to?" He posed on his X official handle.

The protests which were witnessed across the country have resulted in the loss of 41 lives and hundreds injured with some being admitted in various hospitals.
