Kenya on Thursday made a significant move towards realising Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the launch of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Voluntary National Review (VNR) Report 2024.

The report commits Kenya to the journey of achieving sustainable development, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's SDG journey.

The 2024 VNR report is a comprehensive documentation of Kenya's progress since the previous review in 2020.

It presents a balanced narrative, highlighting both the successes achieved and the challenges faced over the past four years.

This approach ensures that the progress made is celebrated while also addressing the obstacles that need to be overcome to achieve the SDGs.

"Our report aims to complement the official Voluntary National Review report by the National Treasury, State Department of Economic Planning, and SDG unit by highlighting ground realities, lived experiences, and people's perceptions. Thus, amplifying the voices of marginalised groups and providing actionable recommendations to bridge gaps and accelerate progress," Florence Syevuo, Executive Director of SDGs Kenya Forum said during the launch.

"It reflects our commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind and that sustainable development is achieved in a manner that is inclusive, participatory, and equitable."

One of the key themes of the report is the emphasis on the involvement of diverse groups in the SDG process.

The report underscores the crucial role that various stakeholders, including civil society organisations, play in driving sustainable development.

"This report is a culmination of a multi-stakeholder consultation that brought together over 60 civil society organisations from diverse sectors to reflect on our journey in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Kenya," Festus Wangwe, Director of Planning in the State Department of MSME said.

"It is indeed a great milestone and a demonstration of the commitment of civil society organisations in complementing government efforts in the implementation of the SDGs in the country."

In response to current global challenges, the report emphasizes the need for renewed commitment and concerted efforts to tackle the pressing issues of sustainable development.

The report also highlights the power of collective action and the essential role of civil society in driving sustainable development.
