The number of advisers assigned to each Cabinet Secretary has been revised from two to one in a new cost-cutting measure announced by the government.

Additionally, the number of personal staff attached to the CSs will remain as set out in the Public Service Commission guidelines being two staffers.

“Consequently, you are requested to assess the requirements of your office and indicate the advisor you would wish to retain to support you in the discharge of your portfolio mandate,” a letter by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei said.

Koskei said any advisers beyond the set threshold will immediately be phased out from the public service.

“You are required to submit to the Public Service Commission the full name of the advisor to be retained by the close of business on July 11, 2024,” the letter said.

Koskei noted that President William Ruto directed that the number of advisors in government be reduced by 50 per cent with immediate effect.

The move is part of austerity measures Ruto announced that are geared towards enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the government.

“The measures also seek to restore faith in public institutions by enhancing accountability, transparency, and the strengthening of good governance within them,” Koskei added.
