Kenya Railways dispatches team to Magadi after train accident

Kenya Railways has dispatched a team to Magadi in Kajiado where a commuter train derailed on Tuesday killing one passenger and injuring several others. 

Kenya Railways said the management has been in direct communication with Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited company, the operator of the train, and has dispatched a team to the accident site. 

"Kenya Railways has learned of the unfortunate train incident along the Magadi - Konza railway line, which is privately operated by Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited," KR Managing Director Phillip Mainga said.

Kenya Railways in a statement said the team has been tasked with gathering more information on the accident.

"Kenya Railways management is in contact with the company and has dispatched a team to the site to gather more details on the incident and offer support," Mainga said.

At least one person died and 59 others sustained injuries after the commuter train was involved in an accident at KMQ, Magadi, Kajiado County.

The accident happened on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in the morning hours leaving 30 of the injured and in critical condition, police said.

Witnesses and police said the Magadi-Kajiado commuter train rolled backwards along a steep stretch, leaving its occupants nursing injuries, with one reported dead on the spot.

The train was headed towards Kajiado town from Magadi. Police said the train had 59 passengers on board from Magadi to Kajiado.
