The National Police Service has said it has registered significant progress towards the restoration of security in the gang-ravaged Haiti.

Kenya has since deployed at least 600 police officers to the Caribbean country; the first batch of 400 officers on June 25 and the second comprising 200 on July 16.

In a statement on Friday, NPS said the troops working in collaboration with the local police service have made strides in fighting the gangs that had almost overrun the Caribbean nation.

“The National Police Service jointly with the Haiti National Police Service forming up the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti has made significant strides in the restoration of security in Haiti,” NPS said.

The police service said the successes that have been achieved so far include the recapture of the Auorite Portuaire Nationale Port, the reclamation of the General Hospital and the liberation of Ganthier Town from gangs.

“In line with these milestones, the MSS team has scaled up the protection of critical infrastructure and conducted more patrols in Port-au-Prince,” NPS added.

In an update issued on July 27, the police service said the MSS had also patrolled streets and cleared road blockades that had been erected along the road leading to the gang-ridden town of Ganthier.

Director General of the Haitian National Police Normil Rameau and Multinational Security Support Mission commander Godfrey Otunge are leading the onslaught.

“National Police Service officers in Haiti reiterates its commitment to continue working closely with HNP and the people of Haiti, in discharging their mandate to help in the restoration of law and order in Haiti,” NPS said on July 27.
