Labor and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary nominee Alfred Mutua has outlined his achievements during his reign at the Tourism Ministry.

Mutua said the number of tourists has grown courtesy of the structures he helped set up where he disclosed that by the end of the year, they are expecting up to three million visitors.

This trajectory, he stated, is expected to continue and hit five million in the next one and a half years.

On the human-wildlife conflict, Mutua said they launched a new compensation scheme where a billion shillings has been paid out to affected victims who had waited for long to get it.

“I have also put in place systems so that more people could be paid,” he said.

Mutua added that he was able to bring an end to corruption in the fencing of the parks which he said had become an avenue for individuals to siphon funds.

“When I came in, I realised we were fencing parks a kilometre for Sh3 million as a way of keeping the animals away...with Sh300 billion which I had, I looked around, I did my research and realised the government was being conned,” he said.

“We were able to advertise and brought it down to a reserve price of Sh850, 000 a kilometre for the same standard of wiring,” he said.

As a result, he noted, that with the funds they have managed to fence they are looking at 400kilometers instead of 100 kilometers.

Mutua was the second nominee for the vetting on the fourth day. He formerly served in Tourism and Foreign Affairs.
