Tourists among four dead in Narok road crash

Three people died on the spot when a Toyota Land cruiser collided with a lorry at Katakala area.

Four people died Monday afternoon in a road accident that occurred at Katakala area in Narok county.

The incident happened after a Toyota Land cruiser they were travelling in collided with a Shackman lorry.

Three of the four in the land cruiser died on the spot during the crash that occured at around 3.10 pm.

The other victim died while being rushed to hospital.

"Traffic police in the area were able to quickly rush to the scene," National Police Service (NPS) spokesperson Resila Atieno said.

Atieno said the team was clearing the scene of accident as she confirmed that three of the fatalities were tourists.

This comes weeks after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said at least 2,407 Kenyans lost their lives in road crashes between January and July 7, 2024.

This represents a 2.82 per cent increase in road crash fatalities recorded  during the same period last year.

There were over 11,502 road crashes recorded over the same period last year during which period 9,874 fatalities were recorded.

At least 6,083 people sustained serious injuries, while 4,083 had slight injuries.

From the deaths, 919 were pedestrians, 210 drivers, 478 passengers, 199 pillion passengers, 46 pedal cyclists, and 555 motorcyclists.

In January, 389 deaths were recorded, 374 in February, 403 in March, 388 in April, 341 in May and 411 in June.

Between July 1, to July 7, 2024, a total of 101 road fatalities were reported across the country.
