Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has declared that he wants to lead the ODM party if Raila Odinga wins the African Union Commission chairperson seat.

Babu expressed confidence that Raila will win the seat in early next year’s elections. 

"Baba akienda, mjitayarishe kufuata Babu! (When Baba goes, be prepared to follow Babu)" he said.

Raila will run against Mahmoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti, Anil Kumarsingh Gayan of Mauritius and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar.

The ODM party leader who is seeking to succeed Moussa Faki Mahamat as African Union Commission chairperson has been receiving delegations from the globe in his office, as he drums up support for the seat.

Addressing a roadside rally in Nairobi on Sunday, Babu said new ODM officials should support him.

ODM has settled on governors Simba Arati and Abdulswamad Nassir and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as its deputy party leaders.

The party also retained Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as secretary general and the party spokesperson. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has been picked to replace John Mbadi as the national chairman.

“By February next year, Raila will go to Addis Ababa, and when Baba goes and Babu will be left behind. Our brothers and sisters in ODM should be ready rally behind me,” Babu Owino stated.

“For those who will want to fight me, I will deal with them properly. We will not want games in our party because this party must produce a president.”

ODM unveiled a new leadership lineup to fill vacant positions following the appointment to Cabinet of Hassan Joho, Wycliffe Oparanya and John Mbadi.

Former Somalia Foreign Affairs Minister Fawzia Yusuf Adam has backed Raila Odinga for the seat.

Fawzia who had been a contender for the seat declared her support for Raila on Friday after pulling out of the race.
