Former minister Franklin Bett was Thursday night rushed to hospital after being injured in an accident along Awasi-Kericho road, Kisumu County.
Two other passengers who were in his car and his driver were also injured and taken to hospital, police said.
Police said the incident happened at about 7 pm on August 15 in Karange area along Awasi-Kericho road.
It involved Bett’s four-wheel drive car and a tractor that was carrying sugarcane.
According to police, the accident happened when Bett’s driver rammed into the tractor.
Both Bett’s car and the tractor were headed in the same direction when the accident happened.
It is believed Bett’s driver did not notice the tractor was ahead of him as it did not have any signage.
The tractor did not stop after the accident as the driver proceeded to his unknown destination.
According to police, Bett sustained a deep cut on the forehead while two other female adults who were in the car and the driver sustained minor injuries.
The former minister was rushed to Awasi Catholic Hospital in stable condition and later referred to Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu for further treatment.
Police visited the scene and towed Bett’s car to the station waiting for inspection.
Police said they are trying to trace the tractor involved in the accident.
Those who saw the victims said they were in stable condition in hospital.
Such accidents involving tractors carrying sugarcane have been a menace amid calls on authorities to stop the movements, especially at night.
Most of the tractors do not have signage to warn other road users and the sugarcane they carry obstruct many warnings.
Police said they are engaging local authorities for a better solution to the trend.
Meanwhile, two people were killed separately in accidents involving bodaboda riders.
The first accident was reported along Kisii-Kericho Highway on August 10.
A pillion passenger died after a motorcycle she was riding on was hit by a car.
Police said the second incident happened on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway near Umash area, involving a trailer and a motorcycle.
It happened that the rider was riding towards Nairobi from Nakuru direction and on arrival at the location of the accident rammed into the rear of the said trailer which was stationary parked half of the trailer on the road while facing Nairobi's general direction, police said.
As a result of the accident, the rider landed on the tarmac and died on the spot.
The trailer was slightly damaged on the rear.
The bodies were moved to the mortuary. Police say most accidents are caused by motorcycle riders and there is a campaign to address the menace.
