Mount Kenya University builds new mosque for Muslim students

The 1,500 capacity mosque seeks to end congestion for students during worship

Muslim students at Mount Kenya University at Thika main campus have a reason to smile after the institution in partnership with Qatar commissioned a new mosque at its main campus in Thika.

The new mosque, which has a capacity of 1,500 people, seeks to ease congestion during worship.

Vice chancellor Deogratius Jaganyi welcomed the expansion of the mosque saying the population of Muslim students at the institution had increased drastically.

“Our population of Muslim students has grown quite big. We look forward to more collaborations,” he said.

Qatar through the Endowment in Islamic Affairs ministry further built a fully equipped library at the mosque.

Ambassador of the state of Qatar to Kenya Mohammed Mutair Al-Shamlani Al-Anzi says his country will continue to cooperate with Kenya in various fields of interest.

“There is a good relationship between the state of Qatar and Kenya. We have given financial support to furnish the mosque and we look forward to continuing with cooperation in different areas,” said the ambassador.

Muslim students at the institution have been worshipping on verandas and residential rooms.

“We used to pray on verandas and other places at the university but we are happy to have a place big enough to accommodate all of us,” Khamis Mukhsin-, Muslim chaplain said

We are very happy with what they have done today. The biggest part is happiness for students. It is important that students are comfortable in academics and also in worshipping,” Mukhsin added.
