Ex-Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya has announced his candidacy for the leadership of the football agency.

In his announcement, Nyamweya said he would strive to make the men's and women's football leagues professional and competitive if handed a fresh mandate.

The veteran football administrator further vowed to clamp down on match-fixing and ensure the national teams improve on their performances on the continental front.

"The leagues need to be run by an independent company. It should be a completely separate entity from the Federation," Nyamweya said.

"The national teams are the face of football in the country. When they are not performing. Everyone loses hope. I have to work on that."

Nyamweya made the comments days after attending the FKF Special General Meeting (SGM) as an observer.

The meeting, held in Nairobi, approved the rules that will be used in the forthcoming election.

Polls will be held before December 2024.

The delegates present also approved a five-man team to oversee the election process.

Nyamweya is seeking a comeback to football's top seat after serving as FKF president between 2011 and 2016.

"The Sports Act allows me another term as president," he said.

Should he contest, the former FKF boss will likely face competition from Extreme Sports Chief Executive Hussein Mohammed.

It remains unclear if incumbent Nick Mwendwa will contest or not, having served for two four-year terms.

Mwendwa has been publicly warned against extending his eight-year term by both Sports Registrar Rose Wasike and Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

The FKF boss has, however, called for a peaceful election.

He has also urged delegates to desist from seeking solutions to disputes from commercial courts.

Other aspirants for the race are US-based former footballer Samuel Kempes Owino and Bandari vice chairman Twaha Mbarak
