President William Ruto has explained why some students have been placed in the wrong bands in the new university funding model.

Ruto who was speaking during a Town hall meeting on Sunday attributed the errors to inaccuracies in information supplied by the students.

He, however, said there was no cause for worry as this can still be corrected.

"Sometimes when a student goes to the cyber and the cyber keys in the information that is not correct, we end up with the wrong information and students in the wrong band," he stated.

He noted that there is an appeal process that allows those who feel they have been wrongfully banded to raise the matter.

He pointed out that there were about 9,000 appeals that were processed.

"This year, 26,000 appeals have come in out of 134,000 students who applied and they are being processed...they have given me an undertaking that the processing will take three weeks and every parent or student will get responses especially if they have supplied and corrected the information that sometimes is on the portal," he said.

He also assured Kenyans that the new model has been tested and has proven to work and his administration intends to use it to take education to the next level.

The head of state at the same time defended the banding saying it has existed for several years.

"We started the banding in 1996, there has always been banding, but it did not start with this model, I know there is a push that may be this banding started with this model, but it did not. It has always been there.

He said he had added one band to the four bands that existed before to make them five.
