Suna East MP Junet Mohammed has declared that he is the opposition leader owing to the fact he is the Minority Leader in the National Assembly.

Junet stated that since the Office of Official Opposition is not enshrined in the Constitution, it would be fair to call the Leader of the Minority Party in the National Assembly the Opposition Leader.

“As it stands now, I am the official opposition leader because I am the Minority Leader and you cannot take away the job God has given me. Those in the opposition should know I am their leader,” he added.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Wednesday declared himself opposition leader following the launch of Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission chairperson seat.

Musyoka, who convened a press conference coinciding with the State House launch of the bid, said Azimio will remain intact after Raila’s departure.

“Yes, I am ready to be the leader of the Official Opposition. This is the team. You will see the Opposition like never before. We may be light in numbers in Parliament but outside we have the people of Kenya,” he said.

Speaking in Homa Bay, Junet said, together with Leader of Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, they are sponsoring a Bill that seeks to reintroduce the Leader of Official Opposition in the Constitution.

“I have seen our colleagues saying we in ODM are in government and such stuff and they are now Opposition leaders. There is no part in the Constitution that talks about Opposition leader. Let no one allocate themselves a job that is non-existent. Let us first create office and then someone can occupy it,” he said.
