Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is scheduled to address the National Assembly today on the country’s readiness to host Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.

His presentation will center on the ongoing construction and renovation of critical sporting facilities, a key focus as the country gears up for the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).

The CHAN tournament will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania between February 1 to February 28, 2025.

This development was confirmed by the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) on September 16, 2024 after an executive committee meeting in Nairobi, Kenya.

Murkomen’s address will cover the current state of major sports facilities, addressing concerns regarding their maintenance, modernisation, and overall suitability for international events.

President William Ruto said last week that Nyayo Stadium and Moi Sports Centre Kasarani which are currently under renovation are set to be completed by December this year.

Talanta Sports City is set to be completed by December 2025.

“The CS to give specific measures or strategies put in place by the Ministry to accelerate the completion of the stalled or incomplete stadia across the country,” the order paper reads.

Apart from infrastructure, Murkomen will also discuss the facilitation of national sports teams.

Leaders will be keen on hearing about the measures in place to ensure their timely preparation, coordination, and management to represent the country in various disciplines.

Murkomen will also highlight the achievements of the Kenya Academy of Sports in fostering grassroots talent development.

This includes the challenges faced and the steps being taken to overcome them.

He is expected to provide details on the number of academies established nationwide, their impact at the grassroots level, and strategies for their sustainability.

This is the first time Murkomen is appearing before the plenary since the formation of the broad-based Cabinet.

The "Question Time' resumed recently after a brief suspension to allow the CSs to familiriase themselves with their new portfolios.
