Ruto steps away from busy schedule for a walk in New York

President William Ruto took a rare break from the hectic agenda of the ongoing 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Wednesday to stroll through the streets of New York City.

Ruto who left the country last Saturday is in the country for the annual meeting that brings together 193 member states of the United Nations.

Clad in a black suit and a brown tie, Ruto who appeared relaxed, was seen walking while going through his phone tablet.

He was accompanied by State House Deputy Chief of Staff Josphat Nanok and his local and foreign aides.

The outing, perhaps, allowed him to experience the city's iconic atmosphere amid the high-stakes diplomatic discussions at the Assembly.

During the day, he chaired several panel discussions and also participated in bilateral talks with various heads of state and key figures that included UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

During the meeting, Ruto said their discussions focused on the implementation of the Railway City project, the extension of our strategic partnership agreement, and the expansion of trade between our two nations.

“Kenya and the United Kingdom have a long-standing history of collaboration and friendship. We are committed to strengthening our cooperation in climate financing, implementing renewable energy initiatives, and advocating for reforms in the international financial system,” he said.

UNGA is the main policy-making organ of the organization UN.

Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations.

Each of the member states has an equal vote.

This year’s session which ends Monday marks a crucial milestone in the global effort to accelerate progress towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Today, Ruto is expected to deliver an address at a planned high-level forum.

Leaders accompanying him on the trip are Prime Cabinet Secretary Musali Mudavadi, opposition leader Raila Odinga, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and his Mining counterpart Hassan Joho among several others.
