NTSA suspends 121 matatu saccos over non-compliance

Authority directs Kenyans not to board the vehicles belonging to the suspended saccos

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Friday suspended the operation of 121 public service vehicles over non-compliance.

The listed saccos have been operating on several routes spread out across the country.

In a press release by the Director General, George Njao, on Friday, the operators have been suspended over non-compliance with the provisions of  Section 5(1) of the National Transport Safety Authority (operations of PSVs) of 2014.

"Members of the public are hereby advised not to board the vehicles belonging to the suspended sacco/companies," the statement reads in part.

"The Traffic Department has been advised to impound any vehicle belonging to the 121 saccos/companies found operating contrary to the suspension

Some of the saccos suspended included 8B Savings and Credit Co-Operative Society whose vehicles operate Fig Tree, Thika Road, Kariokor Gikomba Juja Road, Eastleigh Kiambiu Jericho Jogoo Road, Buruburu Outering Road, Donholm (Caltex) Cabanas Likoni Road, Lungalunga Road Kariobangi South and Kangundo Road.

Others are Crown Bus Service Limited (Mombasa, Mtitoandei, Nairobi, Nakuru, Kericho, Kisumu, Kakamega, Mumias, Bugoma, Malaba), Digital Sacco Limited (Nairobi, Embu, Chuka, Nkubu, Meru, Mikinduri, Maua), and Eldoline Shuttle Sacco Limited (Kitale, Ziwa, Eldoret, Kapsabet, Kisumu).

NTSA is a statutory body established by the National Transport and Safety Authority Act.

NTSA, brings together under one roof the functions of motor vehicle registration, transport licensing and motor vehicle inspection, road safety, driver testing and some extent traffic law enhancement.

The authority advises and makes recommendations on matters relating to road transport and safety.

It also makes regulations regarding road safety and transportation into practice aside from the  planning, managing and regulating road transport sector in accordance with the provisions of the Act.

It further ensures the provision of safe, reliable and efficient road transport service.
